Finding the right women’s dress manufacturer in China can make or break your boutique or online store. With thousands of suppliers across Guangdong, Zhejiang, and beyond, knowing what to look for — and what to avoid — saves time, money, and a great deal of frustration.
This guide covers everything you need to evaluate a China dress factory before placing your first order, from verifying production capacity to understanding MOQ structures and quality control processes.
1. Verify Real Production Capacity
The single biggest mistake importers make is confusing trading companies with factories. A trading company will quote you any product at any price — then outsource production to whoever is cheapest that week. The result is inconsistent quality and zero accountability.
Before engaging any supplier, ask for:
- Number of sewing lines and workers on the floor
- Monthly output capacity (in pieces, not vague estimates)
- A video call or live factory tour via WhatsApp or WeChat
- Their warehouse address on Google Maps or Baidu Maps
A genuine factory will answer these questions immediately and welcome scrutiny. A trading company will deflect or provide suspiciously polished answers.
2. Understand MOQ and Pricing Tiers
Minimum Order Quantities vary enormously between suppliers. For boutique owners and independent e-commerce sellers, MOQ is often the deciding factor.
The industry standard for in-stock wholesale styles typically runs:
- Ready stock: MOQ from 1 piece (for testing and sampling)
- Wholesale tier 1: 100–299 pieces per style (small boutique order)
- Wholesale tier 2: 300+ pieces (better unit economics)
- Custom OEM/ODM: Usually 300–500 pieces minimum per design
Be cautious of factories that quote a very low MOQ on custom work without explaining how they handle sampling and quality control.
3. Evaluate Quality Control Processes
Ask every potential supplier how they handle quality control. A serious factory will have checkpoints built into the production process, not just a final inspection before shipping.
Look for manufacturers who conduct inspections at:
- Fabric receipt (checking material against specification)
- Cutting (verifying pattern accuracy and yield)
- Mid-production (checking stitching, seams, construction)
- Post-production (measuring finished garments against size chart)
- Pre-shipment (random sampling of packed cartons)
Avoid suppliers who use vague language like “we use AQL standards” without being able to explain what that means in practice. Quality talk is cheap — process documentation is the real signal.
4. Check Fabric and Material Sourcing
The quality of a finished dress is determined largely by its fabric. Reputable manufacturers will tell you exactly where they source materials and allow you to request fabric swatches before production begins.
Key questions to ask:
- Who are your primary fabric suppliers?
- Are any of your fabrics OEKO-TEX certified? (Note: this certification belongs to the fabric supplier, not the garment factory)
- Can I request a fabric sample before confirming the order?
- What is your policy on fabric substitution if the original material is out of stock?
5. Understand Payment Terms and Trade Terms
Standard payment structure for new wholesale relationships is typically 30–50% deposit before production, with the balance due before shipment. Factories offering 0% deposit are a red flag — it usually means they are financially unstable or working as a broker.
Trade terms to understand:
- EXW (Ex-Works): You or your freight forwarder collects from the factory. Lower product price, but you control and pay all logistics.
- FOB (Free on Board): Factory handles domestic freight and export customs. You pay international shipping from the port.
- DDP (Delivered Duty Paid): Factory handles everything. Convenient but most expensive; less transparency on costs.
For most boutique importers, EXW or FOB from Guangzhou or Yantian port is the most cost-effective structure.
6. Assess Communication and Responsiveness
In a wholesale relationship, communication quality is a proxy for everything else. If a supplier takes three days to respond to a basic inquiry, imagine how they will handle a production problem mid-order.
Test a potential supplier by:
- Sending a detailed product inquiry and measuring response time
- Asking a slightly complex question about sizing or custom labelling
- Requesting a sample and seeing how clearly they explain the sample fee and timeline
The best manufacturers have dedicated sales staff who respond via WhatsApp within a few hours and can provide answers without constantly escalating to management.
7. Request Samples Before Committing
Never place a full order without a physical sample. A reputable factory will offer samples for a reasonable fee — typically $30–$80 per style depending on complexity — and the sample fee is often refundable or credited against your first order.
When evaluating a sample, check:
- Stitching consistency (stitch count per inch, evenness)
- Seam allowance and finishing (no raw edges)
- Sizing accuracy (measure against the spec sheet)
- Fabric hand feel (does it match what was described?)
- Hardware quality (zippers, buttons, clasps)
